It’s been a long time but we’re back at it again after a lengthy hiatus and as always we’ve come with gifts!! If you’ve been following The Outabodi Xperience, then you know we’ve been following Rhymageddon since the inception of our site in Oct 2010. (See our very first Rhymageddon feature: “Intravenous (In Vain)” by Rhymageddon). With hard hitting lyrics, strategically laced with valuable jewels, anyone within earshot would be blessed to walk away with just a fraction of a gem . Ryhmageddon approaches his craft with true integrity which is rarely seen in today’s Hip-Hop. Sundiata had a Chance to build with the Sergeant of Spit earlier this year.

SUNDIATA: Tell me about where and how you grew up.

RHYMAGEDDON: I was born in Newark NJ at Beth Israel Hospital like so many others of my family on my mothers side. I grew up basically all over Essex County. That includes East Orange, Irvington and West Orange where I graduated from high school. My dad is from Lagos Nigeria. He came here in the early 70s in search of higher education. Whether at home or grandma’s house, music was always a factor. It was there that 1^st heard rap music on my cousin’s radio. Three of my aunts had extensive record collections. I still have my mothers 45s too. My father translated his native music to me as well, so even though early on I didn’t go to church often: I was still raised with plenty of Yoruba proverbs. I had to sneak and listen to rap in my house. My father wasn’t having it. I recorded “The Rap Attack” with the volume down low and listened at school or when they weren’t around. That’s honestly why I take the art of emceeing so seriously.

SUN: Who influenced you the most to do what you do?

RHYMGDN: KRS-ONE most emphatically!! His ability to teach and still be sharp lyrically had a heavy influence on me as teenager. Bob Marley was also poignant in my musical growth along with Chuck D & Nas.

SUN: Who do you work with?

RHYMGDN: Grumpy Old Man, AntiIndustry, NNS, Sol Zalez, KINGSwitCROWNS, 840, KING Ra, Remarkable Mayor, DREW, KK Holloway , Takiyah Diamond, Abzolut Laydez basically NJHipHop.

SUN: What makes you keep doing what your doing?

RHYMGDN: Divine inspiration. I hear a beat and just want to match some witty wordplay with it. I listen to so much hip-hop that I get inspired to do the type of songs that are missing. I find words to be very addictive. My mother went back to college while I was young. I helped her study using flash cards so blame her for the emcee that I’ve become.

SUN: What was your last project?

RHYMGDN: Sergeant of Spit is my last full project. 20 tracks of my favorite artists I’ve been grinding with. It includes my 2^nd EP MASH (May Actually Save Hip-Hop)

I just dropped two digital singles #SUCKaClip produced by Edobeci and Vaccine feat John Robinson produced by Divine Drummah.

SUN: What is your next project?

RHYMGDN: It’s untitled so far but I have six or seven songs completed. I’ll most likely release them as singles

SUN: What are you working on now?

RHYMGDN: I’m always working on feature verses on other artist’s projects. I get called on a lot to collaborate, which is truly a blessing. Plenty of out of state tours and Int’l shows are the primary goals now that my website has surpassed 40,000 listens.

SUN: What can we expect from you as an artist?

RHYMGDN: What you should not expect is predictability. Growth is the first word that comes to mind. On my 1^st EP Horsepower Plus Handling I strove to showcase why I chose the name Rhymageddon. MASH was about showcasing my song writing abilities without being too battle rhyme heavy. Sergeant of Spit was about taking my place of leadership within NJHipHopIzDaMovement and enlisting talented soldiers who can take over.

SUN: What is the biggest difference in Hip Hop between the time you first started to do what you do and now?

RHYMGDN: Nowadays I rely on self close to 75% of the time. Before I was working on someone else equipment and on their time. I can literally write, record, mix and digitally distribute a song from the comfort of my own home now. The best part is performing new songs and gauging the crowd’s reaction to determine the next single.

SUN: Tell us about the name Rhymageddon.

RHYMGDN: What better name to describe an emcee who strives to crush ever bar of every verse? Regardless of the topic my aim is top push myself beyond what’s playing on national radio. I’m looking for a graphic artist to depict the sound of my voice hailing down on wack emcees.

SUN: What advice would you give up and coming artists?

RHYMGDN: Own your masters and take advantage of the digital age of music production and promotion. Brand yourself everywhere and don’t dumb down for dollars.

From the very first time you hear Rhymageddon’s “All My Friends”, you know it’s an instant classic. Going far beyond the realm of just “feel good” music, “All My Friends” is that “good music you just gotta feel”. Though it was once common practice in Hip Hop, the act of paying homage has somehow gone lost and almost forgotten. It’s no wonder why after hearing joints like “All My Friends” people start to realize that Rhymageddon May Actually Save Hip-Hop! Rhymageddon is the voice shaking up the entire Hip-Hop world from the Netherlands to Japan right back to his home state of New Jersey. Blame it on the incisive way his lyrics penetrate the minds of true Hip-Hop fans everywhere. Can you tell he’s grown tired of rappers who only rhyme about the materialistic world? Rhymageddon began penning rhymes while attending Myrtle Ave Jr High but found it difficult to develop because his Nigerian father denounced Rap music in the household. He was forced to secretly record pioneering Hip Hop radio D.J.’s such as Red Alert and Mr. Magic while his parents slept and observe and respect the art form from afar, until he went onto college. It was while at Morgan State University that the Spit Sergeant finally gained the time and freedom to hone his talents and merciless vocabulary at open mic sessions, street corner ciphers, talents shows and college radio stations. In 1994, Rhym recorded his first demo and subsequently returned to N.J. to sharpen his sword even further. Lecks Get It On is well on his way to becoming one of the most highly influential Hip Hop entertainers in the game with his commitment and drive to music. Lecks’ professional music career took off in 2003 with the release of his first “Dat’s Life-day one” album.

The record was a tremendous success in his hometown of Boston and has opened doors for many more opportunities such as landing a deal with the clothing store Hip Zepi USA to be the face behind their televised Adidas commercials.

Shortly thereafter, Lecks’ records were being aired on radio stations such as Jam’n 94.5FM, HOT 97.1FM and 88.9FM throughout the Boston area as well as receiving regular spins in nightclubs.

Lecks has made a name for himself in and around the Massachusetts area by gaining respect and support from innumerable DJs. With the impending release of his first LP, Lecks plans on making his name a household name in every region around the world.
